Decision Maker: Ward Member for Romney Marsh (2)

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

Romney Marsh schools’ afterschool singing - To support our weekly afterschool singing in Marsh schools from January, culminating in a vibrant free concert to families/friends/teachers in JAM on-the-Marsh in July at St Nicholas Church, New Romney.

Decision:

To provide funding of £ 1000 to the above project.

Reason for decision:

Every week from early January, Lydd-based professional vocal tutor Rebecca Lodge will lead afterschool singing clubs at St Nicholas New Romney and Brookland primary schools. This weekly commitment will develop the children’s skills, experience and confidence which have been significantly affected by Covid and lack of teaching ability in schools. Through fun yet structured exercises, Rebecca will teach the children fundamental skills including how to stand, breathe & warm-up, leading to the children learning to sing Opening Night, an amusing piece of 5 songs written for primary school children. Each song is in a different musical style including pop, jazz and classical. On 13th July, the children will come together in

New Romney to rehearse then give a vibrant, united performance in JAM-on-the-Marsh to family and teachers, accompanied by the added sparkle and excitement of top quintet Onyx Brass. After the performance, the children will have probably their first opportunities to hold brass instruments. This inspirational afternoon will be open to parents/families to come free of charge, ensuring access for all.

This project is the post-Covid re-start of JAM’s long-term commitment to nurture aspirations and attainment, rekindle extra-curricular interests and skills, bring communities together and build foundations for life.
